Worlds most beautiful cycling        Northern Europes steepest       Easy-going nordic atmosphere

Yes you can !

01.08.2012

Probably one third of viking wannabes, signed up or not, call or email the organisation asking if we believe just they can complete the coming Viking Tour. Timing is usually of no interest - just the nagging urge to conquer those infamous mountains and have that emotional blast of doing something you`re not sure you can.

Take Jaques here on the right. The then 71 year old Swede used a bike weighing at 15 kilos as he completed the 2007 Viking Tour. If not for the monstrous 2011 edition, Jaques would still have finished the toughest route ever used north of the Alps. The photo is taken next to the final timing line, on the northern summit of Mount Vikafjell and facing Sognefjorden 1000 meters below. His smile is not due to sceninc delight though - it was the same confident friendly grin at every summit for the whole week.

Or take those 120+ kilos machines that keep grinding steel and defying gravity, the rookies to organized touring on their offroad bikes and adrenaline, the grandparents and their grandchildren, the liver transplantee, the newly-wed on honeymoon...

Few people are used to climbing anything like the mountains of western Fjord-Norway - at least not for days on end. Fear not th emountain - fear a too heavy gearing. If you have light enough gears - you may find the long climbs to be asier than racing to stay with a group on so-called flats. The low speeds leave little and no headwind to avoid  - and you know instantly it is just you and your own fight with the hill. You may be able to follow stronger climbers for a while...but you`ll probably pay tenfold for the time advantage before you`re half way up. Think of Indurain and Ulrich - keep it just at your own limit and concentrate. Chances are you`ll catch up with and pass the eager ones up the mountain. Use the force, Luke.

Yes you`ll need to train and you `ll need an all-right bike with light enough gearing. But the real issue is you. Your determination and smartness is the crux of it all. Ride conservatively and save a little energy at least during the first stage and enjoy waking up with surprisingly good legs next morning. This is the big advantage of stage racing over non-stop marathons - your bodys ability to recover during sleep. After a  challenging day of cycling you can eat all you want in company of like minded and let biology fix you up during the night.

You are indeed welcome to call or email us at any time. But the answer will surely be the same - Yes, you definetely can !
